Local Flavor : Asheville’s Tupelo Honey Cafe

2025-09-19

If you’re craving Southern food done with creativity, heart, and hospitality, few places deliver like Tupelo Honey Café. Located in downtown Asheville and nearby South Asheville, this local favorite is more than just a restaurant—it’s part of the region’s culinary DNA.

Since opening in 2000 in downtown Asheville, Tupelo Honey has been grounded in the idea of reviving Southern traditions—not just by resurrecting classic flavors, but by refining them with fresh, responsibly sourced ingredients.

Their philosophy isn’t just about what goes on the plate; it’s about the way food is made (scratch-made whenever possible), who it feeds (locals and travelers alike), and how it fits into the community. They emphasize hospitality, warmth, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Walking into Tupelo Honey feels like entering a kitchen-table version of elegance: comfortable, a little rustic, but polished,  and plenty of Southern charm. Whether you’re there for brunch or an evening meal,  it strikes that sweet spot between casual and special.

The South Asheville location has an outdoor patio complete with faux grass - feels like a picnic!  This location also has spaces for private dining or semi-private events.

Tupelo Honey's menu is rich, inventive, and deeply Southern with twists. These are worth a try :

  • Biscuits. Their buttermilk biscuits (with blueberry or peach jam) are legendary in local foodie circles.

  • Fried Green Tomatoes over goat cheese grits and red pepper coulis. One of my faves! - A harmony of crunch, creaminess, and tang.

  • Classic Fried Chicken & Waffles - sweet and savory.

  • Smothered chicken, collards, and the kind of sides that feel like  “home”.

It's hard to go wrong with their seasonal dishes... twists on Southern staples like omelets, flat irons, and breakfast platters.

The value is pretty solid for the quality you get. Portions are generous. If you’re going for brunch or dinner, expect reasonable pricing for scratch-made food.

They do happy hour specials (“Hoot & Holler”) at certain locations, which is a nice way to try some of their offerings at lower cost.

Tupelo Honey is one of the best nearby spots for a meal that feels both comforting and inspired.   The menu offers something for everyone - meat lovers, vegetarians, folks who want classic brunch, or those looking for dinner with flair.

A Few Tips for Visiting
